The Irreplaceable Value of Court Reporters

In Court Reporting by Luke

A few days ago, someone here stumbled onto an article from the New York Times titled, “There Is No Substitute for Real-Time Court Reporting.” As you can imagine, everyone here agreed. There were nodding heads and smiles everywhere as we read a well-worded validation of ourselves. Computers have tried to replace court reporters, but as Nancy Varallo eloquently writes, “Court reporters are indispensable to the legal system because they offer 21st-century solutions to unyielding situations that demand speed without sacrificing accuracy. They are certainly not relics of a bygone era.” And these words have inspired us.

These days our aspirations are not to show the advancement of technology, but rather to use any advancements we can as court reporters to better our service to any and all people we serve. Our aim is to be the most accurate, quickest, and most friendly court reporters, transcribers, videographers, etc., in the city of Louisville, the state of Kentucky and beyond. Though technology is becoming more reliable, many feel that there are nuances in court reporting that make having a real-life reporter in the room much more valuable than a computer with recording software. Michael Levenson writes in the Boston Globe, “…witnesses may speak too softly to be recorded by a microphone. And if the system stops working, the court may not realize it until it’s too late to restore the record.” Mistakes like these validate the human aspect of court reporting, though only after inexcusable mistakes occur.
